Disney World or Universal for a 6-Year-Old

Disney World has more rides in the 35 to 44-inch range than Universal. A height-requirement table from both parks and what a 6-year-old can ride.

The Short Answer

Disney World is the better fit for most 6-year-olds. At 44 inches, a child can ride the core of Magic Kingdom, several Hollywood Studios rides and all of EPCOT’s family attractions. At Universal, the signature rides that families talk about most all require 48 inches, which puts them out of reach for many 6-year-olds. Epic Universe, which opened in 2025, adds more accessible options at Universal, but Disney World still offers more variety for the 44-inch range.

How Tall Is a Typical 6-Year-Old?

Most 6-year-olds land between 43 and 47 inches tall. The 44-inch mark is a useful benchmark for this age, though children vary and I always tell families to measure at home before the trip rather than guessing. A child at 44 inches is right at the limit for some of the most popular rides at both parks, so an inch in either direction changes the plan.

Height Requirements at Both Parks

The tables below cover the family and thrill rides most families with a 6-year-old ask about. All measurements are in inches. Heights shown are for a child at exactly 44 inches; a taller child will qualify for more.

What This Means in Practice

At Disney World, Magic Kingdom alone has more rides under 44 inches than all of Universal Orlando combined. A 6-year-old who is 44 inches tall can ride the full Magic Kingdom coaster lineup except for TRON, most of Hollywood Studios, all of EPCOT’s family section and Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom.

At Universal, the same child can ride the three Epic Universe attractions in the 40 to 42-inch range, plus Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure. The rides that draw the longest lines and the most conversation, Hagrid’s and Forbidden Journey, will still be a year or two away.

A Question to Ask Yourself

Has your 6-year-old been to Disney World before, or is this their first big theme park trip?

If it is the first trip, Disney World is where I would start. The variety at the 44-inch range means they can do something meaningful at every park rather than watching older siblings from the sidelines. Universal makes more sense as a follow-up trip when children are a little taller and have already experienced Disney.

If your family has done Disney World several times and wants something new, Epic Universe is worth considering. The Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic world and Super Nintendo World are genuinely different from anything at Disney, and the 40-inch accessible rides there are solid for a 6-year-old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Disney World or Universal better for a 6-year-old?

Disney World is the stronger choice for most 6-year-olds. A child at 44 inches can ride the majority of Magic Kingdom, including Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tiana's Bayou Adventure. At Universal, the most popular rides like Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey both require 48 inches. Epic Universe adds more options at 40 to 42 inches, but the overall ride count still favors Disney World at that height.

What height does a 6-year-old need for most Disney World rides?

Most family-friendly rides at Disney World open at 35 to 42 inches. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train requires 38 inches, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 40 inches and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind 42 inches. Space Mountain, Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage each require 44 inches. The only rides that regularly stay out of reach for most 6-year-olds are TRON Lightcycle / Run at 46 inches and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at 48 inches.

When does Universal Orlando become better than Disney World for kids?

Once children reach 48 inches, Universal opens up considerably. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and VelociCoaster all require 48 to 51 inches, and a family with an older child who has done Disney World several times often finds Universal more exciting at that stage. If a 6-year-old has a sibling at 48 inches, I would still put Disney World first and add one Universal day to the trip.
