What to Wear to Disney World, Month by Month

Shorts and layers cover most of the year at Disney World. Orlando's own weather averages show which months need a jacket and which need a poncho.

The Short Answer

Wear light, breathable clothes and comfortable shoes, and add a layer from December through February. From May through October, plan on shorts, a hat and a poncho. March, April and November sit in the middle, so a light layer for the morning is plenty.

The One Number I Look At

I look at the gap between the high and the low. In February Orlando averages a high of 74.9°F and a low of 52.4°F, a 22.5°F swing, the widest of the year. That is why a family that dresses for the afternoon is cold at 8 a.m. rope drop and again on the walk back to the resort. In summer the swing narrows to 17 to 19°F and the low never drops below 71°F, so there is nothing to layer for. The table below has every month.

Dress for the Morning and the Afternoon

Ask yourself which part of the day you will spend outside the longest. Then plan around that.

  • Winter (December to February): a light jacket or hoodie for the kids, shorts in the bag for the afternoon.
  • Spring and fall (March to May, October and November): short sleeves, with one layer for early and late hours.
  • Summer (June to September): moisture-wicking shirts, shorts, a hat, and a poncho in the bag every day.

Shoes and the Details That Help

  • Shoes you already love. Walking is most of a park day.
  • Socks, plus a spare pair for the kids in case of a splash or a shower.
  • A hat for everyone and sunscreen, all year.
  • Matching family shirts are fun for photos, but check they are thin enough for the heat.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Pack

  • Which month are we going?
  • Are we doing a water park or a resort pool?
  • How long are the kids happy outside before they need a break?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a jacket at Disney World?

From December through February, yes, for early mornings and evenings. Orlando's average low is 49.5°F in January and 52.9°F in December, per NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals.

What shoes should kids wear at Disney World?

Broken-in sneakers or sturdy sandals with a back strap. Families often walk several miles a day, so new shoes are the one thing I would not test in the parks.

Will it be too hot to wear jeans?

From May through September the average high is 88.4°F or higher, so lightweight shorts and breathable shirts are the easier choice for kids and adults.
